24 Rounds of Pacquiao vs Marquez: The Judges Scorecard

24 Rounds of Pacquiao vs Marquez: The Judges' Scorecard

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fought two hotly contested 12-rounds fights. A third fight is now more or less official and scheduled this coming 12th of November this year.

Let's take a look on how the judges saw the two fights between these two legendary boxers.

The first fight was a judges' nightmare. All 3 judges had totally different final score for the fight. One judge had Pacquiao winning by 5 points, one had Marquez winning also by 5 points and the third judge having it a draw but admitted that he made an erroneous score for round 1. The judges were in agreement (having the same score) only in 5 out of the 12 rounds. Pacquiao started fast and leading in the scorecards up to round 5 where Marquez was able to even the score in one judge. Pacquiao was still leading in 2 judges scorecards throughout the remainder of the fight. After the 11th round, Pacquiao leading 6 points and 1 point in 2 judges scorecard. Technically, Marquez needs to knockdown or to knockout Pacquiao in the last round in order to win. It didn't happened and the first fight resulted to a disputed draw.

The second fight was at least a clearer verdict from the point of view of the judges. They were in agreement in 9 out of 12 rounds. Pacquiao again started fast and leading the scorecards up to round 7 where Marquez even the score in one judge scorecard. Pacquiao still leading in 2 judges scorecards most of the fight and after the 11th, he's still enjoying a 2 point lead in one judge and 1 point edge in another judge. Same scenario as the first fight, Marquez needs a knockdown or knockout in the 12th and final round in order to win. Pacquiao won via split decision in the second fight.

Review: Pacquiao's last 4 full 12-rounds fights

Review: Pacquiao's last 4 full 12-rounds fights

Manny Pacquiao's last four fights that lasted the distance were against Shane Mosley (UD12), Antonio Margarito (UD12), Joshua Clottey (UD12) and Juan Manuel Marquez (SD12). Pacquiao emerged victorious in all 4 fights, 3 by (easy?) unanimous decisions and 1 by a tough split decision.

Pacquiao almost scored a shutout in the 3 UD fights scoring 359, 357 and 358 out of the perfect score of 360. The split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez is the toughest fight of the four with only 1 point separating him and Marquez with the aggregate scores of 341 vs. 340.

Ranking the 4 fights from toughest to easiest, I say it's in this order; Marquez, Margarito, Clottey and Mosley. Marquez, relatively the smallest of the 4 boxers gave Pacquiao the toughest fight (styles make fights) although the biggest of the 4, Margarito (at 150 lbs.) also seemingly gave Pacquiao some hell of a fight. Mexican boxers (Marquez and Margarito) gave Pacquiao the tougher fights while an American or of African origin gave the least opposition.

From this limited number of examples of Pacquiao opponents, we can say that a Mexican boxer will most probably give Pacquiao a tough fight maybe due to their overall warrior fighter mentality. Black American-African boxers (Mosley and Clottey) did not present a difficult challenge to Pacquiao for whatever reasons.

One odd thing from the 4 Pacquiao opponents is, the longer the name of the boxer, the tougher the fight he gave to Pacquiao. Calling Floyd Sinclair Joy Mayweather Jr.
